About Ethereum
Ethereum is a programmable blockchain proposed by Vitalik Buterin. Ether (ETH) pays for computation ("gas") on the network, which runs smart contracts, stablecoins, DeFi apps and NFTs.
- Launched
- July 2015
- How it runs
- Proof of stake (since The Merge, Sept 2022)
- Supply rule
- No fixed cap; part of every fee is burned (EIP-1559)
Worth knowing
- Since EIP-1559 (August 2021) the base fee of every transaction is burned, so supply can shrink when the network is busy.
- Validators stake 32 ETH to help secure the chain.
- Gas prices are quoted in gwei, one billionth of an ETH.

What is the Ethereum price right now?
The live Ethereum (ETH) price in US dollars is shown at the top of this page and refreshes every minute from the CoinGecko API, which averages trades across many exchanges.
How is Ethereum's market cap calculated?
Market cap = current price × circulating supply. For Ethereum that is the live ETH price multiplied by the number of ETH in circulation shown in the stats table.
How many ETH are there?
No fixed cap; part of every fee is burned (EIP-1559). The live circulating and maximum supply figures are listed in the stats table on this page.
How much would $1,000 in Ethereum a year ago be worth now?
See the "If you had bought Ethereum earlier" table on this page: it applies ETH's live 7-day, 30-day, 200-day and 1-year price changes to any amount you type in, before fees and taxes.
Can I track my ETH without an account?
Yes. Add ETH to the free portfolio tracker or set a price alert; both are stored only in your browser.
