How market cap works: move the dials
A made-up token, "DIAL". Change its price and supply and watch the two headline numbers react.
The aha: Less than half of DIAL is circulating. If the remaining 60M tokens arrive at today's price, the network would need $120.00M of fresh demand just to stand still. Doubling the price or doubling the circulating supply moves market cap exactly the same amount, which is why a $0.00001 coin can outrank a $500 one.
What the total market cap tells you, and what it doesn't
The total crypto market cap is the most-quoted single number for "how the market is doing". It rises when prices rise and, to a lesser extent, when new coins are issued. Because Bitcoin and Ethereum together usually make up around two-thirds of it, the total mostly follows those two; see Bitcoin dominance for how that share shifts.
It is not a measure of money invested. Thinly traded tokens can post huge market caps because a small trade set a high last price. That's why the 24h volume-to-market-cap ratio above is useful: a low ratio means the headline value rests on relatively little trading.
Stablecoins are counted too. Their market cap grows when people park dollars on-chain, often while waiting to buy, and it barely moves with prices, so in a sell-off their share of the total climbs.
Questions people ask
What is the total crypto market cap today?
The live figure at the top of this page is the sum of the market capitalisations of every cryptocurrency CoinGecko tracks, refreshed every minute.
What is market cap in crypto?
Market cap is the current price of one coin multiplied by the number of coins in circulation. It is a quick way to compare the size of projects whose unit prices are wildly different.
What is the difference between market cap and fully diluted valuation?
Market cap uses the circulating supply. Fully diluted valuation (FDV) multiplies the price by the maximum supply that will ever exist. A big gap between them means many tokens are still to be released, which can weigh on the price.
Does a $1 trillion market cap mean $1 trillion was invested?
No. It is a mark-to-market figure at the last traded price. If everyone tried to sell at once the price would fall, so the cash you could actually get out is far lower than the headline number.
How much of the crypto market is stablecoins?
The stablecoin share is shown in the stats on this page. Because stablecoins sit near $1, their share tends to rise when the rest of the market falls.
