Every coin in the index
Sorted by performance. The line marks Bitcoin: coins above it count toward altcoin season.
What "altcoin season" actually means
"Altcoin" means any cryptocurrency other than Bitcoin. Crypto markets tend to move in phases: money often flows into Bitcoin first, then rotates into Ethereum and larger altcoins, and finally into smaller, riskier tokens. The index turns that rotation into one number.
The thresholds are conventions, not laws: 75+ is labelled altcoin season, 25 or below Bitcoin season. A short window (7 days) flips often and can be triggered by a single strong week; the 30-day window is steadier. Neither predicts what happens next. It describes what already happened.
It pairs well with Bitcoin dominance: dominance measures value share, this index measures breadth. A few giant altcoins can drag dominance down while most alts still lag Bitcoin, and the index catches that.
Questions people ask
What is the altcoin season index?
It measures what share of the largest altcoins performed better than Bitcoin over a period. When at least 75% of them beat Bitcoin it is called altcoin season; when 25% or fewer do, it is Bitcoin season.
How is this altcoin season index calculated?
We take the top 50 coins by market cap, remove Bitcoin, stablecoins and wrapped or staked copies of other coins, and count how many beat Bitcoin's price change over the chosen window (7, 14, 30, 200 days or 1 year). Index = that share × 100. It is computed live in your browser from CoinGecko data.
Why does your number differ from other altcoin season indexes?
The best-known version uses a 90-day window. We offer 7, 14, 30 and 200 days plus 1 year. Different coin lists and exclusions also change the result, so compare readings within one source.
Is it altcoin season right now?
The gauge at the top of this page gives the live answer for the window you pick, and the "every window at a glance" table shows the reading for 7 days, 14 days, 30 days, 200 days and 1 year side by side.
Is altcoin season coming?
Nobody can say in advance. Signs people watch are a falling Bitcoin dominance while the total market cap rises, and the short-window index (7–14 days) climbing above the long-window one. These describe momentum that is already happening; they are not forecasts.
Why is there no 90-day window?
The well-known 90-day version needs 90-day price changes for 50 coins. The free CoinGecko feed this page uses in your browser offers 7d, 14d, 30d, 200d and 1-year changes, so we show those instead of estimating a 90-day figure.
What counts as an altcoin here?
Every coin in the top 50 by market cap except Bitcoin itself, stablecoins (they track the dollar, not the market) and wrapped or liquid-staking copies of other coins such as WBTC or stETH, which would just double-count.
