The maths, step by step
- Coins bought = (investment − buy fee) ÷ buy price.
- Sale proceeds = coins × sell price, minus the sell fee.
- Profit = what you get back − what you invested. ROI = profit ÷ investment × 100.
- Break-even = buy price ÷ (1 − fee)². With a 0.5% fee on each side, the price has to rise about 1% before you're even.
A 50% loss needs a 100% gain to get back to where you started; the "what if" table makes that asymmetry easy to see. And the number here is before tax: in the US, the IRS treats crypto as property, so a sale at a gain is a capital gain, and short-term gains are taxed as ordinary income. A short-term gain stacks on top of your salary, so it is usually the top slice that gets taxed; ahaboo shows that stacking visually.

Questions people ask
How do I calculate crypto profit?
Profit = (sell price × coins) − (buy price × coins) − fees. ROI is that profit divided by what you put in (including the buy fee), times 100.
How do fees affect my break-even price?
You pay a fee when you buy and again when you sell, so the price has to rise above your buy price just to get your money back. The calculator shows that break-even sell price.
Can I use the current price as the sell price?
Yes. Pick a coin and press "Use live price" to fill in today's price and see your unrealised profit right now.
Is crypto profit taxable?
In many countries, yes. In the US, for example, the IRS treats crypto as property, so selling at a gain is a capital gain; how it is taxed depends on how long you held it and your income. This calculator shows pre-tax profit.
