Base fee over the last 40 blocks

How a gas fee is built

21,000 × (10 + 1) gwei = 0.000231 ETH

Of that, 0.000210 ETH (the base part) is burned and 0.000021 ETH goes to the validator.

The aha: the protocol targets half-full blocks. At 50% full, the next base fee becomes 10.00 gwei (unchanged). A run of full blocks compounds 12.5% at a time, which is why fees spike so fast during a rush, and fall just as fast after.

Questions people ask

What is gas on Ethereum?

Gas measures the computing work a transaction needs. A plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas; a token swap uses far more. You pay gas used × gas price, where the price is quoted in gwei (one billionth of an ETH).

Where do these gas prices come from?

Your browser asks a public Ethereum node for the fee history of the latest blocks (eth_feeHistory). We read the current base fee and the priority tips that the 10th, 50th and 90th percentile of transactions paid, and update every 12 seconds, about once per block.

What is the base fee and what is the priority fee?

Since EIP-1559 every block has a base fee set by the protocol, which is burned, and rises or falls by up to 12.5% per block depending on how full the previous block was. The priority fee (tip) goes to the validator and buys you a better spot in the queue.

When is Ethereum gas cheapest?

Usually when fewer people are transacting, often weekends and late night US time. The live base fee is the best guide: if blocks are less than half full, it will keep falling.
