What goes into the score
The index is published by Alternative.me and focuses on Bitcoin. Its documented ingredients are:
- Volatility (25%): current swings and drawdowns versus the 30- and 90-day averages. Unusual volatility reads as fear.
- Market momentum and volume (25%): high buying volume in a rising market reads as greed.
- Social media (15%): how fast and how much people are posting about Bitcoin.
- Dominance (10%): a rising Bitcoin dominance is read as a flight to safety within crypto (fear); a falling one as appetite for risk.
- Trends (10%): Google search interest for Bitcoin-related terms.
Alternative.me lists a 15% surveys component as paused. Treat the index as a thermometer: it tells you how hot the room feels right now, and it tends to swing to extremes right after big price moves.
